Customer Reviews :
Inexpensive and does the job. By M. H. Vaillant (Florida) Star
I purchased this item to check my house for heating/cooling adjustments and checking insulation and leaks. It has far greater temperature range than I will ever need and it has performed very well, is rugged ( dropped it a couple of times ) and inexpensive. The hard case is a big plus, and overall, it is a great value.

Affordable IR thermometer Star
Bought one of these a few years ago upon seeing Alton Brown use one in his show “Good Eats”. He uses a model like this one to gauge the exact temperature of a frying pan or grill or whatnot. I also found it useful for looking for drafts in my house.

Very easy to use. Just pull the trigger and point the laser at the spot that you want to measure. (The laser doesn’t actually do the reading, it just lets you know where you’re pointing the IR sensor.)

Accuracy seems pretty good. A radioshack thermometer in my room reads 75.4 degrees and the IR thermometer reads the temperature of the case of the radioshack thermometer at 74.9 — Only 0.5 degrees variance between the two seems pretty good to me.

The only complaint I have is that my specific one has a glitch in it where occasionally the whole thing will “lock-up” and have odd characters displayed on the screen. I’m not sure if this is a quality control thing or a general model defect. The good news is that I’ve figured out that if I use a little “percussive maintenance” (a slap to the side) it will work properly again. I suspect there is a loose connection somewhere, but I haven’t bothered to take it apart yet and see if I can fix it.

Overall a nice little IR thermometer. I dinged it one star because of the mediocre quality control, but maybe I just got a bad one.
